Historical Timeline

1987:

National Park Service issues the Georgetown Waterfront Park Plan, which designates a boathouse zone with six specifically identified boathouse sites, including the one on which the proposed Georgetown University boathouse would be located.

1995:

Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on potential land exchange between National Park Service and Georgetown University.

1998:

Preliminary Agreement reached between National Park Service and Georgetown University to exchange Tract 102-109 (owned by the University and located about one mile up river of the proposed site) and Tract 102-114 (the proposed site owned by the National Park Service). Tract 102-109, presently owned by the University, would be valuable to NPS because it comprises sensitive environmental resources as well as includes an easement along the Capital Crescent Trail that is over one-mile long and 15-feet wide.

2001:

The Commission of Fine Arts and the Old Georgetown Board enthusiastically approve the boathouse design.

2002:

National Park Service and Georgetown University apply for zoning for the proposed site, and Zoning Commission recommends new zoning category (W-0) to accommodate uses such as boathouses. The total footprint of the boathouse in the initial submission was 19,378 gsf.

2003:

On June 4, ANC 2E submits letter to Zoning Commission stating it unanimously recommends approval of the Zoning Commission application.

2004:

On April 9, Zoning Commission issues order approving W-0 zoning for the site and special exceptions and variance for proposed boathouse; the Zoning Commission's Order reduced the footprint of the boathouse to 18,682 gsf.

2005:

On May 26, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia dismisses federal case alleging violations of federal environmental standards, which had been filed in October 2004.

On December 30, the D.C. Court of Appeals issues decision affirming the Zoning Commission Order approving the Georgetown University boathouse.

2006:

On April 25, the National Park Service released Environmental Assessment on proposed Georgetown University Boathouse.

2007:

On December 3, 2007, National Park Service issues Federal Register notice announcing initiation of Environmental Impact Statement.

Continuing a long and proud tradition, Georgetown University's rowing program counts approximately 180 participants each year on eight teams. Crew student-athletes come from all four of Georgetown's undergraduate schools.
